Next month, young people eager to try one of Canada’s rapidly growing sports, pickleball, can do so for free at the Burlington Pickleball Association’s open house.

Children aged 8 to 14 are invited to drop in, test their skills against peers, and receive guidance from coaches and organizers.

“Our goal is to expand the sport of pickleball in Burlington, and part of that involves introducing it to the youth,” said Jenn Lickver, vice president of the Burlington Pickleball Association.

The event aims to provide an accessible opportunity for families who have never played pickleball to experience its appeal.

Kids can come ready to play and will be provided with paddles, balls, and basic instructions. The Burlington Association, which has around 500 members, is keen to welcome new players.

Most members sign up in the fall when the need for organized indoor play arises due to colder weather. However, finding enough indoor space can be challenging given the high demand for pickleball courts.

“We have spring and indoor summer programs because there isn’t enough outdoor space for all our members – though some are dedicated outdoor players,” Lickver explained.

“We’ll run a mini indoor series in July and August, and in September, our membership will peak again, with 250-300 people playing.”

Pickleball’s popularity spans all ages because it’s easy to start, has a lower barrier to entry, and a gentle learning curve, according to Lickver.

“There’s also a social element; while singles can play, most people enjoy doubles,” Lickver said.

“Many partners, including couples, play together. The sport’s appeal grows not only from its enjoyment but also because nearly anyone can quickly pick it up.”

Although the open house focuses on youths, families are also welcome to drop by and learn more about the sport.

The association has rented six courts, ensuring ample space for new pickleball enthusiasts.

For many, the enjoyment in casual pickleball lies in gradual improvement and the social interaction that accompanies the game.

“There’s a lot of smiles in pickleball,” Lickver noted.

The Burlington Pickleball Association’s open house will be held at Haber Community Centre on Sunday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to noon.
