Belleville Recreation Department Introduces New Adult Programs

Belleville Township is set to launch its inaugural adult programs under the guidance of interim director Lenny Averhoff. These initiatives aim to cater to the sports enthusiasts within the community.

One of the highlights is the introduction of a pickleball league exclusively for residents aged 18 and above.

This league will feature doubles play and will take place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Belleville Municipal Stadium Complex. Individuals without a partner can also register to participate.

Additionally, Belleville is rolling out a co-ed basketball league featuring 3-on-3 games played on half-court.

Teams can consist of up to five players, with a requirement that each team has at least one female and one male player on the court at all times. Games will be held on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Friendly House in the Silver Lake section.

Lenny Averhoff, a retired Port Authority policeman and a familiar face in Belleville’s sports community, expressed his enthusiasm for these new programs.

“I’ve enjoyed participating in various sports programs over the years, and I know many Belleville residents share the same passion for sports. We’re excited to kick off these adult summer programs, starting with basketball and pickleball because of their popularity. Our pickleball lessons, for example, consistently fill up within days.”

Registration for both the pickleball and basketball leagues closes on July 20, with games commencing on July 27. The registration fee is $50 per team, payable by check or money order to the Township of Belleville.

Mayor Michael A. Melham emphasized the significance of these programs in fostering healthy lifestyles and community connections.

“It’s great to see Belleville’s recreation department offering adult programming for the first time. Sports and recreational activities not only promote physical health but also help residents build friendships and strengthen community bonds.

Under Lenny Averhoff’s leadership, the department is already making a positive impact.”
