Jennifer Dawson: The Journey to Becoming a 4-Time US Pickleball National Champion

Jennifer Dawson’s story exemplifies resilience, passion, and excellence in sports. As a four-time US Pickleball National Champion, she has carved an inspiring path in a game she truly loves.

This piece explores her journey, well-being practices, and advice for athletes striving to maintain lifelong participation in sports.

Sports at Every Age : A Lifelong Pursuit

Engaging in sports has immense physical, mental, and social benefits that transcend age. Dawson is a vocal advocate of this philosophy, emphasizing the importance of staying active, regardless of life stage.

“My mom, who is about to turn 82, plays pickleball six days a week,” Dawson shares. “It’s essential to keep moving, use your body, and engage socially, physically, and mentally to stay healthy.”

Dawson recently joined QVC’s “The Quintessential 50,” a platform celebrating women over 50 who challenge societal norms and embrace new opportunities. “Being an ambassador for QVC’s Age of Possibilities is an incredible honor.

It’s about showing that age doesn’t limit you—you can start a business, take up a new sport, or pursue hobbies at any time,” she says.

The Journey into Pickleball

Dawson’s introduction to pickleball was serendipitous, stemming from her tennis background. Having started tennis at seven, she played Division 1 college tennis and even toured professionally before stepping away to focus on family.

After years of playing senior tennis, she discovered pickleball at her family-owned Bobby Riggs Tennis Club.

“We initially rented tennis courts to a group interested in pickleball,” she recalls. “It looked like so much fun. My husband started playing first, followed by me and my sons. It just grew from there. Today, our club is now a full-fledged pickleball center.”

Dawson appreciates pickleball’s social nature, which she contrasts with tennis. “Pickleball courts are closer together, fostering camaraderie and laughter. It’s a joyous, communal experience.”

Staying Motivated and Strong

For Dawson, pickleball is more than a sport; it’s a source of joy. “I treat it as something I love, not a job,” she explains.

Surrounding herself with supportive and fun teammates has been key to sustaining her passion.

Nutrition also plays a crucial role in her success. “I focus on protein, fruits, and vegetables while minimizing carbs. This gives me the energy I need to stay active.”

Before big matches, Dawson adopts a calm mindset. “I avoid getting overly hyped. I focus on strategies tailored to my opponent and try to stay relaxed.”

Mental Health and Recovery

Dawson values her morning routine for mental clarity. “I start my day with coffee, breakfast, and some light news. Then I ease into training or pickleball.”

Post-tournament recovery involves massages, compression sleeves, and light cardio to loosen muscles. “Recovery is essential to perform consistently,” she notes.

To decompress, Dawson indulges in relaxing activities like paint-by-numbers and binge-watching shows. “Painting is meditative. You don’t need to think—it’s all mapped out for you.”

Building Strong Partnerships
