Pickleball enthusiasts in England have reason to celebrate as the sport has officially been recognized by Sport England.
Additionally, Pickleball England has been acknowledged as the national governing body for the game in the country.
Already the fastest-growing sport in the United States, pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity in England. In a joint decision, the four national sports councils—Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Northern Ireland, and Sport Wales—unanimously recognized pickleball as an official sport.
Sport England issued a statement highlighting the efforts of Pickleball England (PBE) in meeting the stringent requirements necessary to govern the sport.
These include demonstrating strong governance, effective delivery systems, and plans to increase participation. “Pickleball is growing quickly, and we’re excited to see PBE continuing to provide accessible opportunities for people to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of the game,” the statement said.
The recent England Open, held from October 31 to November 2, showcased the sport’s rising appeal, with over 2,000 participants.
At the European Pickleball Championship in Southampton, England shared top honors with Spain, earning two gold and four silver medals. England’s team medaled in every category, while Spain secured two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
According to Sky.com, there are now over 35,000 pickleball players in the UK. Karen Mitchell, chair and co-founding director of Pickleball England, expressed the unique joy the sport brings.
“Anyone who picks up a paddle and plays experiences the pure joy it offers. It’s hard to describe—it’s like reconnecting with your inner child,” she said.
As pickleball continues to grow, its official recognition marks a significant milestone for the sport in England.
