Professional pickleball signs first international deal, looks to grow the sport in India

The sport of pickleball, known as America’s fastest-growing sport, is now setting its sights on India, marking a significant step towards international expansion.

In a groundbreaking move, the United Pickleball Association and Global Sports have inked a deal aimed at introducing the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball to India, the world’s most populous country.

This marks the inaugural international deal for the United Pickleball Association, formed following the merger of Major League Pickleball and the Professional Pickleball Association last February.

Despite the merger, both entities retained their distinct brands, with the PPA Tour focusing on an individual bracket-style tour, while MLP adopts a team-based format.

While specifics regarding the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the implications are clear. Connor Pardoe, founder and CEO of the PPA Tour, emphasized the significance of the partnership in creating a platform for players to compete on a global scale and attracting new fans to the sport.

As part of the collaboration, the PPA Tour is slated to host an official tour stop in India next February, with the Indian Open event serving as the inaugural PPA Tour event in Asia.

This event is expected to draw participants from across the globe.

Additionally, the deal will see the launch of PPA Tour India, providing players in India with opportunities to earn ranking points at events held throughout the country.

Major League Pickleball, known for its team-based league, will also make its mark in India by organizing a competition featuring a blend of local talent and international professionals from both MLP and PPA Tour.

Looking ahead, the United Pickleball Association has ambitious plans for the future, including the sale of MLP franchises through an open process, with the aim of launching a full 12-team season by 2025-26.

These franchises are anticipated to come with a hefty price tag, according to sources.

This move towards international expansion follows Major League Pickleball’s recent announcement of its expansion into Australia.

Moreover, the APP Tour, catering to both amateurs and seniors, has been actively involved in bringing pickleball to various countries including India, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Sweden.

Global Sports, a key player in introducing pickleball to India, operates courts and organizes tournaments in the country.

Shashank Khaitan, partner at Global Sports, highlighted the rapid growth of pickleball in India and the opportunities this partnership presents for local players to compete at a global level.
